On the first Friday of February, every year, we host Give Kids a Smile Day.  It is a national event sponsored by each state's State Dental Association.  This year it was held on February 6th, in our office.  We work in cooperation with area schools, after school programs and day care centers to provide free dental treatment to area elementary students.

Each child sees a dentist for an examination, the dentist looks for cavities and other problems.  We also make sure each student receives a "tooth print".  It is a soft piece of material that the child bites into, this leaves the impression of the child's teeth as well as a saliva sample in case either of those is ever needed by law enforcement.  Each student also receives a free fluoride treatment and if needed they will also receive free sealants on their permanent teeth to help prevent cavities from forming.  We give each child a goody bag when they leave, containing a new toothbrush, toothpaste, floss,  and information about the importance of taking care of your teeth.

We always have great volunteers to help us with Give Kids a Smile Day.  This year we had 3 other area dentists helping with exams.  We had an instructor and 4 students from the Polaris Career Center in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, and Extended Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) from Brunswick, Ohio come in to help.  Also students from the Ohio Valley College of Technology and Dr. Caldwell's staff were on hand to help.

We always have fun on Give Kids a Smile Day and we hope to see even more students when we do it again in 2010!
